My father underwent a partial liver resection surgery owing to a malignant tumor present in his liver at Columbia Asia Referral Hospital a month ago. The surgery in itself was a complicated one but was dealt with so much ease by Dr Govind Nandakumar. During the resection he realized that even the gall bladder and a part of the colon that was badly infected needed to be cut and join the rest of it...he didn't make any issue that the patient's family was not available for the discussion during the surgery and he gave a thorough explanation to me over the phone. He also made sure he stepped out of the operation theater and explained it to me in person the moment I reached the hospital. His ability to hold a compassionate space for the patient's family and also ensure that he is in full control of the role of a "surgeon" to do what’s best with utmost transparency is hard to symphonize. Dr Govind certainly walks the talk and is genuinely concerned for the well-being of his patients.
